Higher-Order Thinking and Complex Skills

The PTLES pushes students beyond routine tasks. It encourages them to solve real, authentic problems in an interdisciplinary way, work collaboratively with their peers, manage their own learning, and reflect on their thinking using metacognitive and reflective skills. Furthermore, we strengthen reflection by involving not only critical thinking but also conscious learning, where students become aware of their assumptions and choices. Meanwhile, we place more emphasis on interdisciplinary tasks by covering both VET and sustainability contexts and the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic). Furthermore, it stimulates them to use innovative technologies such as VR or AR. These capabilities help them handle complex workplace situations.

High-Quality Instructions

High-quality instruction is important in every PTLES. Teachers provide structured lessons with clear goals and fitting learning activities. Moreover, they always start from what students already know about the topic and support students towards finding the right solutions. There's a strong focus on transferring knowledge from theory to practice and from school to the workplace. This kind of instruction keeps students engaged and ensures steady learning progress.

Learning Tasks in the Authentic Contexts

Practical VET subjects offer rich opportunities for hands-on sustainability learning. Students may work on energy-efficient installations, experiment with environmentally friendly materials, or solve sustainability challenges drawn from real workplaces. Authenticity enhances motivation and deepens understanding.

Adaptive Teaching

VET classrooms are diverse: students vary widely in motivation, background knowledge, and learning pace. Adaptive teaching ensures that each learner can engage meaningfully and the learning environment aligns with students' needs and preferences. The learning tasks that students experience should be challenging, disorienting, and engaging. We added disorienting learning tasks in this block because emotion is crucial to both learning for sustainability and transformative learning. Students' learning tasks should be challenging, emotionally affecting, and engaging to have a deep impact on students. Furthermore, their teachers provide opportunities for feedback and assess the students with a focus on learning.

Classroom Management

A well-organized and supportive environment is essential for student learning. Students need to feel safe asking questions and making mistakes. Therefore, the classroom is organized to facilitate learning, and the teacher establishes clear rules to manage student behavior and safety.
